Official list should be out in a few weeks. I took the OTC salary cap figures and made a few adjustments: -- First, i added the "proven performance esclator" to the 4th year of the rookie contracts for Chris Carson, Tedrick Thompson and Shaquill Griffin.
I also assumed EFA tenders for all the guys on the list at their current minimum salary. There are a couple of other possible "cap casualties" but i think we can all agree Dickson will not be back at his same salary if at all.
Right now that's just a hypothetical figure as lots can change and the league-wide cap hasn't been made official yet.
We'll also have to account for draft picks at some point. That's still a lot of opportunity to beef up the roster. The others are UFAs except for Bellore who has another year on his deal to go, the team renewed the contract they had with him after he was cut and then returned.
I just don't know that the team will return all of the ERFAs but is they do the team has 56 players under contract prior to FA and the draft.
They always seem to be able to get quantity of players but presently with the obvious DLine and OLine issues quality will come with some expense.
I think you are more right than OTC is about the real available cap number but we need to have a consistent source and OTC is usually pretty dependable.
With the available money to spend and the potential cap cuts and limited areas needing improvement the roster will potentially be beefed up.
I find OTC more reliable than Spotrac. I use a combination of OTC and Rostermon to gather data. Branden Jackson didn't accrue his first year with Oakland for the same reason.
He is an RFA. OK, I'll adjust those those. Presently I'm having secure connectivity problems with OTC. I've been using their info all year long and noted the FA status of each player as per their info, so that must have changed recently.
Not to worry, we are trying to get this info right. Will adjust on the others. If you look at the roster with the FAs pulled from it there are still a few guys who may not be on the team next season for performance and cap reasons.
My suspicion is the following are going to be looked at hard for cost benefit reasons or may be cap casualties.
However, he could be renegotiated and extended freeing cap. TE- Dickson, he's done, his knees are shot.
RB- Prosise, 4 years of significant unavailabilty to one injury or another, when he was needed he let the team down, no reward for signing him back.
That's still enough to build some depth that can stay healthy and improve both the OLine and the DLine. At the end the team ended the season pretty nicked up and there will be some positions where fresh faces will be needed to prevent repeating the same.
There will also need to be a revisiting of several defensive schemes as the team seemed vulnerable on the edges. Further this last year's team tackled poorly and gave up far to many yards after initial contact.
There are coaching issues therein, but there are personnel issues implicit in this observation. Since we're talking about salary cap stuff -- I think it's good to look at the free agents who might be in line for new deals this off-season.
It really comes down to two key guys -- Chris Carson and Shaquill Griffin. Under normal circumstances that would be candidates for extensions.
I'm just not sure how eager players will be to sign new deals while the CBA is under negotiation. Interesting times. I suspect there is too much money on the table for all to be wanting to fight at length about the implementation of a new CBA.
Don't think creating the new deal will be as fractious as last time. That's JMO and it is certainly a worthwhile situation to be concerned about though.
Now I may be skewed because the Hawks obviously hit gold in with their drafting, it's unrealistic to find that much amazing talent in the rounds they did.
But I feel like the past 5 years or so, outside of maybe Marquee players, a lot of the Hawks drafting has ended up with so-so players, players who can't stay healthy, players who take themselves out of the NFL before they even play, and possibly players who have other off-field issues.
I don't know what the issue is, is it just because the team competes year after year and now drafts at the bottom? Either way from my casual fan standpoint it seems like the poor drafting has been the thing really preventing the Hawks from getting over the hump.
Zag, that's certainly a view that others here have as well. I don't completely agree however as the team has drafted some pretty capable players in the last few drafts, but there have been a few significant fails as well.
If it were easy to always draft good players there would be no busts. Very often what a player accomplished in college simply doesn't translate as a pro for any number of reasons.
Frequently as well this is a situation where how good the players are that were drafted is a matter of personal opinion. ALL the latest Seahawks news straight to your inbox!
